Reich Allyson w Bob F

2022 05 17 | Host: Bob France | Lt. Allyson Reich, Vernon Fire Rescue

Bob France introduced Calvin’s wife, Lt. Allyson Reich, of Vernon Fire & Rescue Services. Ally began firefighting 2001-05 at Sun Peaks, before joining VFRS in 2005. She’s our only female firefighter – one of +/-130 out of +/-4,300 professional firefighters in BC. Recently, she hosted 11 Grade 10 girls from WL Seaton Secondary for a “Firefighter for a Day” program, loosely modelled on Camp Ignite - Camp, Firefighting, Summer Camp At our main firehall, the girls were introduced to senior officers & the duty crew, then given a comprehensive tour of the hall, trucks & tools of the trade, followed by lunch. Then they suited up in turnout gear, hopped into a truck & enjoyed a short drive. The aerial ladder truck was displayed, & teams of girls deployed hoses, preparing them for water. Finally, they used extraction tools to open a donated vehicle, simulating a vehicle accident response. Some attendees were seriously interested in firefighting as a career, but the real objective of the day was to inspire broader opportunities & confidence among them. There’s a lot of competition to get into fire departments. Candidates usually require some post-secondary education or a trade, plus a Class 3 Driver Licence with air brake endorsement. Allyson also recommends the 12-week Justice Institute course for firefighting. She’ll soon be discussing future “Firefighter for a Day” sessions with SD22 & her employer – ideally, she’d like to see two sessions annually.
